NEW SIX WEEK EXTENDED PROGRAM
When it comes to addiction treatment programs, one size does
not fit all. While there is no ‘magic’ number that determines
how long a person ought to stay in primary care treatment,
research does support that the longer one stays involved in the
treatment recovery process, the better their chances of success.
Now in addition to offering a traditional four week program, Crossroads
announces the launch of a six week extended program to its complement of
treatment services. Our extended program is expressly designed for clients
who may have prolonged detoxification needs, need more time adjusting to the
treatment environment and daily routine and/or who have had multiple
treatment episodes and require concentrated attention on specific treatment
areas such as relapse prevention.
Our staff is committed to working with each client at the pace to which
they are able and we recognize that often more time is needed in order to
develop trust and personal safety in the community, to practice new coping
skills and to develop practical confidence in their ability to sustain
recovery outside of a protected environment. We believe all these things are
achievable with a variable length of stay that emphasizes an individualized
approach.
How it works
All individuals entering into treatment at Crossroads are assessed for
appropriateness for either the six or four week program. In some instances,
referring professionals may indicate a preference for their client to attend
the extended program, in which case this can be decided prior to arrival.
Clients may also self-identify for this programme during the pre-admission
process. In other instances it may become more apparent after the individual
is already engaged in the treatment process; in which case the clinical team
may make recommendations for a longer stay.
Phases of treatment
There are three phases of treatment and depending on the client’s
individual needs, each phase will vary in length. Below is an outline of the
general activities and objectives for each phase.
Phase One. This phase addresses detoxification,
stabilization and orientation. The general objective here is to help clients
to acclimate to the treatment regimen and begin to focus on the preliminary
treatment plan. Program elements will include:
- Detoxification and stabilization
- Additional assessment, education and orientation
- Introduction to the 12-Steps and group process
- Individual counselling
- Introduction to holistic treatment approaches such as auricular
acupuncture, therapeutic massage therapy, nutritional assessment, and

Phase Two. During this phase treatment becomes more
intensive and focuses on the development and implementation of the master
treatment plan. Program elements will include:

- Daily group process
- Psycho-educational groups
- Spiritual counselling
- Family programme
- Individualized treatment assignments

Phase Three. Focus for this phase is on preparing
clients for their successful transition to the next stage of recovery. This
involves more than just appropriate continuing care placements, but also
involves working with clients to identify existing challenges and making
preparation for implementation. Program elements in phase three include:
- Intensive relapse prevention planning
- Continuing care planning
- Medication management
- Family consultation
- Alumni contact referrals
- Review the system of follow-up for clients post-discharge
