Look Outward in Order to Look Forward

Reflection is powerful. It allows us to look back in order to learn, grow and look to the future. Understanding and appreciating our past gives us strength to create a life with purpose centered on God, as we understand Him, and others more than ourselves. “We will not regret the past, or wish to shut the door on it”. Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 83 (9th step promises)

The beginning of each new year is exciting! It can be a time of “do overs,” and “do betters,” because we recognize that life in 12 Step Programs are full of second chances. With 2019 wide open in front of you, the opportunity exists to make this your best year yet.

What might that look like?

At Crossroads Centre Antigua, we want to challenge you in making the very most out of your life in recovery this year!

Find joy in being:

Humble. Accept that you need others continually to be your best self. Life is not meant to be lived alone. Surround yourself with people who always have your best interest in mind. By doing so, you will find that you become the person they need in their lives too. If you need to make amends with someone, now is the time. Give unselfishly to these relationships and humbly accept the love in return. Remember, love is the greatest barrier-breaker and bridge-builder there is.

Hopeful. Focus on the 12 Steps of Recovery as your guide to everyday living. Revisiting each step strengthens your resolve to continue the path to lifelong recovery. Through hope for a better tomorrow, your heart can remain open to the possibilities that are present each day. Look for opportunities to make mindful decisions that positively affect not only your life, but the lives of others. Continually practicing Steps 10, 11, and 12 as daily actions keep our side of the street clean, a strong connection to our Higher Power, and opportunities to live an altruistic way of life.

Healthy. A new year provides 365 days to make healthy choices. Each day presents a fresh start from the day before. If you make a mess of something, you can start your day over any moment in the day. Being healthy encompasses wholistic living: physically, spiritually and emotionally. Dedicate yourself to take care of your body, your commitment to your Higher Power, and your mental well-being. When forces come between you and a healthy lifestyle, work the 12-Step Program and remove them, so you can live the fulfilling life you deserve.

Happy. It really is a choice. Attitude is something we do have control over. A grateful heart allows you to give to others, which in turn increases your self-esteem and self-worth. Find the joy in volunteering in your community. There are always others who need your help such as: the homeless shelter, Boys and Girls Club, church missions, Habitat for Humanity, local library or a senior care home. The places to find happiness are all around you; through giving it away, you will receive so much more in return. I’m sure you’ve heard the quote in the rooms – “you have to give it away in order to keep it”!

Healed. We know this is a process. Healing comes in stages, and with each step your journey continues. Overcoming disease means you are a fighter. Be proud of your accomplishments and pay it forward, but don’t forget to give credit to your Higher Power and the 12 Step Program that brought you your freedom. Find others who you can share your wisdom with, provide support for them in their quest to be healed. Through intentional actions filled with positive purpose throughout 2019, you will find this can be your best year yet.

Happy New Year Everyone!
