Entering treatment can be likened to embarking on an underwater exploration of a shipwreck, much like the journey depicted in Adrienne Rich’s poem, “Diving into the Wreck.” The purpose of this journey into this demanding setting is clearly stated in the sixth stanza: “I came to explore the wreck…I came to see the damage that was done and the treasures that prevail.” Coming to treatment is a journey of self-exploration that involves confronting an oftentimes troubled past filled with pain and shame. It also involves a process of self-discovery that ignites hope and faith in recovery. Entering treatment is a remarkable passage that takes courage, openness, and willingness. It is truly life-transforming!
Many individuals come into treatment with the wreckage of their addiction scattered around them. Though their backgrounds are diverse, their stories of foundering and stranding echo each other. Addiction is a progressive and debilitating disease that impacts every facet of a person’s existence. Untreated, it causes a deterioration of physical and mental health, financial instability, legal problems, social isolation, and overdose. The Narcotics Anonymous literature starkly sums up the outcome of those in the grip of addiction as: “jails, institutions and deaths.” The ruin caused by addiction also extends to significant others who are eyewitnesses and casualties of the devastating effects of this loss of control. They too must make the painful descent to survey with accountable eyes the damage that they suffered and retrieve with an open heart the treasures that come with new insight.
Though entering treatment takes courage to reflect on past struggles and failures and face the reality of being adrift, its rewards are worth the undertaking. Treatment offers the time and place to pause, take stock, and begin the process of recovery away from distractions and negative influences. It provides support and community, reducing isolation and complacency. Through the various activities and assignments, opportunities are created to gain insights into thoughts, feelings, and behaviors; learn new coping skills; engage in healthy behaviors; and improve physical health and emotional wellbeing. Trained professionals, as navigators, guide the individual in treatment through their raggle-taggle experiences and emotions by offering a safety net to be vulnerable and bring their shadow self into the light. It is a process that continues beyond treatment but is best started in treatment.
As an Admission Counselor, I have witnessed firsthand the transformation that can occur when individuals take that brave step into treatment. I marvel at the determination and resilience of those who choose to confront their addiction and start on the path to recovery. Regardless of whether the motivation comes from within or from external factors, or what stage of change an individual is in, every step taken towards progress is commended, no matter how small. The journey may be daunting, but with the right support and guidance, it is possible to emerge from the wreckage stronger and more resilient than ever.
